I grew up as the oldest child of a surgeon and a teacher. They hoped that I would do everything by the book and in a healthy way. My mother, a Persian literature major, taught me how to read and write when I was four years old. Six months later I wrote my first book. I was angry with Cinderella and Snow White so I created my own princess and wrote her story. My dad’s hobby was to justify the existence of every ingredient on our dinner table by explaining their health benefits. At five years old when I picked raw dill out of my salad, he started teaching me about flavonoids and how antioxidants keep us healthy. I was also given the same speech every time I asked for a doggone hot dog!
I studied biology in high school and continued with genetics for my masters. As a PhD student working 18 hours a day in the lab, I was very passionate about finding a cure for breast cancer.
