Who is Hathor?

About1_image_3

Hathor by e5sther

Hathor is the most popular Goddess of Egypt who was worshiped for over 3000 years and ruled the sky. She was the Goddess of femininity, fertility, and love. Her principal animal form is that of a cow, and she is strongly associated with motherhood. The Milky Way, as seen in the night sky, also came to be associated with her as it was considered a heavenly Nile river, the giver and sustainer of all life.

She also came to be considered the ultimate personification of kindness and love. Further, she was associated with joy, music, love, motherhood, dance and above all, gratitude. For all deities of ancient Egypt, the priest had to be the same sex as the deity they served, but Hathor’s priests were both women and men. Many of them were dancers, signers or musicians so art became one of Hathor’s domains.‏ Although Hathor was the Goddess of femininity, she was not only a women’s deity. She also had a large and devoted following among men. Hathor ruled birth and death. She figured into the mythological understanding of the afterlife where she provided peace and solace to the souls of the deceased.

The Greeks called Hathor by the name of their goddess, Aphrodite. Hathor is the daughter of the God of sun. Her solar connection was emphasized by her title as “eye of the sun”. Legends have it that she became angry with her father, wandered away from Egypt and went to live in the desert as a lioness. Great sadness fell over the land and the sun. Her father lost without his eye, set out to bring her back. This proved to be no easy task as the lioness was wild and angry. She was so enraged that no man or God would volunteer to fetch her back. Eventually Thoth (God of wisdom and the divine mediator) decided to lure her back and robed in masquerade, managed to charm the angry goddess into returning home by telling her tales of fable. Back in Egypt, she bathed in the Nile and once again settled into her heavenly demeanor, but not before the waters turned red from efforts of cooling her rage.

Amazingly, Hathor was also the patroness of minerals found in the desert. In Sinai turquoise mines she was called “The Lady of Turquoise”.

About1_image_4The fellowship of Hathor was one of the most honored and widespread in ancient Egypt. Her worshipers dedicated more festivals in her honor than any other Egyptian goddess and more children were named after her than any other deity. Her prolific temple following‏ spread from Denedra to Memphis and Thebes. Part of initiation into her fellowship was a fascinating ritual named “The Five Gifts of Hathor”. This ritual called for the worshiper to name five things they were most grateful for while looking at their left hand. As the poorest of Egypt were field workers, they would hold the grain in their left hand while the blade in their right hand would cut the stalk. The beauty of this ritual was that by looking at the left hand and naming five things that people were most grateful for, they were constantly reminded of the good in one’s life. Hathor was equally important to the peasant and the great officials. The aristocrats of Egypt would recall the five gifts as a way to remain humble in the faces of the Gods. Royal ladies were often adorned as the “Priestess of Hathor”.

My Story

About3_image_2I grew up as the oldest child of a surgeon and a teacher. They hoped that I would do everything by the book and in a healthy way. My mother, a Persian literature major, taught me how to read and write when I was four years old. Six months later I wrote my first book. I was angry with Cinderella and Snow White so I created my own princess and wrote her story. My dad’s hobby was to justify the existence of every ingredient on our dinner table by explaining their health benefits. At five years old when I picked raw dill out of my salad, he started teaching me about flavonoids and how antioxidants keep us healthy. I was also given the same speech every time I asked for a doggone hot dog!I studied biology in high school and continued with genetics for my masters. As a PhD student working 18 hours a day in the lab, I was very passionate about finding a cure for breast cancer.

In 2008, during a devastating personal health crisis when medications fell short, I had to look outside my upbringing and education for a cure. I could see my disease and feel the pain but despite their best efforts, a group of top New York sub-specialists couldn’t understand what was wrong with me and how to help.

I was very disappointed that the medical system I believed in so much had let me down. As a left-brain scientist, I would dismiss any methodology that could not be quantified in a research article.

After months of excruciating pain and disappointment I had to look outside academia and conventional medicine for help. I was desperate. After six months of intense learning and discovery, I completely healed myself without the use of a single medication. As valid and reliable as the conventional medicine is, it’s not without flaws. My personal experience proved that there is more to the complexity of human mind and body than the scope of today’s medicine is capable or willing to look at.

After years of research and clinical trials, I had seen too much. Working towards one more drug was not something I was willing to participate in anymore. I decided to leave that responsibility to my brilliant colleagues and to explore further what I had discovered and focus on two things: prevention and non-invasive therapy.
